Upcoming Wii U: Nintendo Changes the Game Yet Again

When the original Nintendo Wii was released in 2006, most people didn't take it seriously. The weird controllers and family-oriented games didn't exactly appeal to the world's hardcore gamers. But, the Wii surprised everyone with great success, and motion controlled gaming eventually spread to every major gaming console.

Six years later, Nintendo is planning the release of a new gaming system that it hopes will shake up the gaming world yet again. The Nintendo Wii U is promised to be released in time for Christmas and features new gaming technology that will change the video game experience.

A Controller Like You've Never Seen

The new Nintendo Wii U controller involves a 6.2 inch touch screen tablet that can be used with the television for added gaming features or can be used alone as a hand-held device. The controller also has a front-facing camera and microphone, as well as classic parts such as an accelerometer and gyroscope, dual analog sticks, and all the standard control buttons.

Only one of the new controllers can be used at a time, and any four original Wii controllers can be used for multi-player gaming. The Wii U is said to still involve motion control, but the touch screen adds a more in-depth gaming experience.

Rising to the Challenge

One of the big questions surrounding the Wii U is whether or not it will be able to stand up to the PlayStation and XBOX consoles. The Wii U will be Nintendo’s first 1080p HD console and is said to have a CPU that is similar to that of the XBOX 360. But many fear that it simply will not compare in terms of graphics.

However, the Wii U is planned to be plentiful in games geared to both hardcore experienced players and to the family gaming types. More edgy games for adults are expected, so it is possible that the Wii U just might step up to the big leagues in terms of capturing more serious players.

Other Nifty Features

The Wii U has some interesting new features. The controller, for example, can be used as a television remote so you can use the Wii U whenever you watch shows about Mustang heads or whatever you may find interesting. More impressively, the controller will have Near Field Communication abilities making it capable of interacting with objects held above it. It will be interesting to see how this feature can be used in game play.

The Wii U will also feature the Miiverse which is a communication system where players can post messages, challenge friends to games, and connect with players around the world. The Wii U will be Wi-Fi capable and be able to offer video chatting and web browsing capabilities. Nintendo also claims to be working the Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube to have videos that integrate the second screen experience.

Only time will tell if the Nintendo Wii U will share in the success of the original Wii. Either way, it is nice to see Nintendo striving to constantly bring new technology into the gaming world.
